Washington Gov. Signs Gay Marriage Bill Into Law

Gov. Chris Gregoire handed gay rights advocates a major victory Monday, signing into law a measure that legalizes same-sex marriage in Washington state, making it the seventh in the nation to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

Gregoire signed the bill surrounded by gay rights supporters. "I'm proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal," she said.

It's a historic moment for the state, but same-sex couples can't walk down the aisle just yet.

The law takes effect June 7, but opponents on multiple fronts already are preparing to fight.

Opponents filed Referendum 73 Monday afternoon. If they collect the more than 120,577 valid voter signatures by June 6, the law will be put on hold pending the outcome of a November vote. Separately, an initiative was filed at the beginning of the legislative session that opponents of gay marriage say could also lead to the new law being overturned.

Gay marriage supporters said that while they are ready for a campaign battle, they are allowing themselves to celebrate first.

"You have to relish this moment," said 31-year-old Bret Tiderman of Seattle.

Hear hear! *applause* Congratulations Washington!

Why to these cretins still think that's it's right to put a person's right to equal protection under the law up to a popular vote? The ignorance is mind boggling.

I think it's time to seriously start a campaign and get signatures to vote on if the marriages of adulterers will be legally recognized or not (I vote not).

So, the WA state government mis-numbered the referendum. It is now Referendum 74. In addition, there will probably be Initiative 1192 (I think I have the number right) that will attempt to define marriage in WA state as between a man and a woman.

So supporters of the just signed law will need to vote YES on 74 and NO on 1192 (as confusing as that is sure to be -- something gay marriage opponents are surely counting on).

Not surprise the 'opponents' of gay marriage want to put this up to a vote. I really can't see why gay marriage is so wrong to these people, given it does not hurt hetero marriage at all.

Anyway, I hope the people of Washington State do not stoop so low.

"I hope the people of Washington do not stoop so low."

We won't! I live in WA., and have watched all this closely. Governor Gregoire took her time, waited for the opportune moment, and did what she thought right. Many here wanted it to go faster, but in the end, trusted her judgement, and she did not fail.

Now if the governor of NJ can only get his head out of his a$$......

It's sat that people will spend millions of dollars to try to stop this from happening when it does not involve them in any way. Their money will be better spent helping the needy.

120,577

Is this really the required number? Is that just a percent of the population or did someone really sit down and think... "If 120,577 people exactly disagree, it should be put up to a vote"

That is the number for any referendum in the state of Washington. It is not issue specific. It would be the same number if the referendum was to ban using infants as soccer balls.

Angry Left,

as a resident of Your state, and a broke hick... Phhttttttttttttttt!

Oh, and I wonder why I'm broke, could be because the west side doesn't know... or care that there is a east side?

Why did the Governor sign this legislation? Because she's worried about her legacy... as a lame duck... and a leader that should worry... she'll do whatever her party requires... regardless of what effect it has on our state...

She could care less about gay marriage... this is all a stunt... and to be clear I could care less about gay marriage myself...

BTW, maybe you can explain why the cops on your side of the state act like it's the Wild West?

    Angry Left-532262

or care that there is a east side?

Not really, the majority of the states income comes from the "real tri cities" Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia. But still the hicks on the east bitch and moan about Seattle and our liberal ways, but don't mind us sending all our money east to build a bunch of hicks roads and schools in their one stop light towns.

Whats great is that King County has a population large enough to counter EVERY single one of those little red counties to the east. So keep bitching and moaning about liberal king county, while you drive on the roads we paid for. Let's see what happens to all those little no name counties without the King County tax base.....they would dry up even more than they are already. I love the fact that every hick county out there votes red....and love dino but there just isn't enough of them....Seattle alone turns this whole state blue.

I have always said that Idaho should just annex everything east of the mountains, but Idaho can't afford to support you so they dont want eastern WA either.

I would love to keep our revenue here in the county.....i really couldn't care less about the welfare counties in the east.

...and I bitch about the cops all the time....it's right wingers that won't let us lock those @!$%#ers up like normal criminals and thugs.

hey master, on the subject of legalization of marijuana, i think you'd stand to benefit the most...if you're a farmer. currently farmers get an average of 50 dollars for corn and wheat. currently canadian farmers earn 200-300 dollars an acre for legal hemp. i would think you would support legalization of marijuana. hell, i know i'm gonna be first in line to get a farmer's license if they legalize it...i'm already on the waiting list! so if you're a farmer or your family's full of farmers, you're broke because of prohibition...if you support prohibition, that means you are in a cage of your own making...plus, you'd think somebody with the word "angry" in their name wouldn't be all roses and sunshine, anyway.

You tell me what other agricultural product you can get 3k a pound for.....truffles maybe, but people don't spend 4 years in college eating truffles.

Of course the hick farmers that are all anti-pot now will be the first ones to plow down some of those apple trees to start growing pot after its legalized.

If your religion tells you homosexuality is an evil that's fine. If it tells you to persecute those who are homosexual and deny them equality it is not a religion. It is a sickness.

Interesting tactic. It's been suggested that gun-control supporters should join the NRA en masse and stage a coup. I wonder what historical examples of that kind of tactic have been tried and been successful.

Persecution is the systematic mistreatment of an individual or group by another group.

My problem with this process is every time a legislature or the people of a state vote against gay marriage, we see all this hand wringing about how there shouldn't be a vote on the rights of some smaller group. But then when the Washington state legislature votes to approve it, everybody is all "Hooray! Let justice be done!", etc. It's really hypocritical.

No government at any level should be in the marriage business. We should all have civil union status. Let churches "marry" people.

              Agreed,

The people of Wa state already voted and approved of "civil unions" the legislators are just approving it at this level. Personally I dont know what the differance will be as far as the law concerning married couples or the civil union but I think there would be some differance.

It shouldn't be put to a referendum of public opinion to vote for denying equality of rights... State Lawmakers are elected at the behest of constituents to make law. If the laws they make are unconstitutional they are struck down in the court, and if the people don't like what they did they could be voted out. Public opinionshould not be used to deprive rights.

I also agree (it won't happen) and then if a couple (any couple) wants to have a religious or other traditional ceremony - good for them.

If a religious organization refuses to participate when the couple is LGBT, then their faith is probably not worth sharing and there are many other faiths that will accept all comers!

For those of you around the Bay Area, Glide Memorial will open its doors, heart and arms to anyone willing to cross their threshold. Also, Glide won't call you names if you don't want to participate.

I dont know what the differance will be as far as the law concerning married couples or the civil union but I think there would be some differance.

What are some of the limitations of civil unions?
Civil unions are different from marriage, and that difference has wide-ranging implications that make the
two institutions unequal. Here is a quick look at some of the most significant differences:

                Portability:
Marriages are respected state to state for all purposes, but questions remain about how civil unions will
be treated in other states since very few states have civil unions.
                Ending a Civil Union:
If you are married, you can get divorced in any state in which you are a resident. But if states continue to
disrespect civil unions, there is no way to end the relationship other than by establishing residency in a
state that respects the civil union.
                Federal Benefits:
According to a 1997 GAO report, civil marriage brings with it at least 1,138 legal protections and
responsibilities from the federal government, including the right to take leave from work to care for a family member, the right to sponsor a spouse for immigration purposes, and Social Security survivor
benefits that can make a difference between old age in poverty and old age in security. Civil unions bring
none of these critical legal protections.
Taxes & Public Benefits for the Family:
Because the federal government does not respect civil unions, a couple with a civil union will be in a kind
of limbo with regard to governmental functions performed by both state and federal governments, such as
taxation, pension protections, provision of insurance for families, and means-tested programs like
Medicaid. Even when states try to provide legal protections, they may be foreclosed from doing so in joint federal/state programs.
                Filling out forms:
Every day, we fill out forms that ask us whether we are married or single. People joined in a civil union
don't fit into either category. People with civil unions should be able to identify themselves as a single
family unit, but misrepresenting oneself on official documents can be considered fraud and carries
                potential serious criminal penalties.
                Separate & Unequal -- Second-Class Status:
Even if there were no substantive differences in the way the law treated marriages and civil unions, the
fact that a civil union remains a separate status just for gay people represents real and powerful
inequality. We've been down this road before in this country and should not kid ourselves that a separate
institution just for gay people is a just solution here either. Our constitution requires legal equality for all.
Including gay and lesbian couples within existing marriage laws is the fairest and simplest thing to do.

                http://www.glad.org/uploads/docs/publications/cu-vs-marriage.pdf

so enacting civil unions for gays and not marriage is akin to separate drinking fountains for blacks and whites. not equal , second class.

either marriage for all or civil unions for all, gay and straight.

As for churches ? they have never been forced to marry anyone gay or straight. Nothing about that would change. Some churches would marry gays by choice and some would choose not too.

what needs to change regarding the religious ceremony is the legality of it.Some churches officiate weddings where it reaches to the state via paperwork. Where getting married in a church makes it legal. That should stop.

                Ripley,

The only way to use civil unions would be a federal law that states civil unions and marriage are exact synonyms under the law. I.e. legally, define civil union as civil marriage and marriage as a religious rite. At which point, we are left with the same dispute.

The point here is that the only effect is to confuse the issue for no purpose. It is a waste of time, energy, and money. It is pointless and absurd. This whole argument is a distraction from the real issues that face this country. Consenting adults have the right to enter into the contract we call marriage. The right however, wants this social wedge so they can continue to push tens of millions of people into indentured servitude and reestablish a feudal system of monied plutocrats and serfs.

SeaTac Airport is actually a nice place to spend waiting for your next connecting flight out of Washington to Idaho. You won't have to leave and actually interface with any Washingtonians.

Who in the hell flies to Idaho??? Is there something there to see??? Maybe if you are taking a tour of white supremacy enclaves.

Washingtonians are actually nice moderate people. It appears IV is not a moderate. So, letting IV know he doesn't have to leave the terminal WHEN he flies thorugh SeaTac to Idaho to be with his compatriots, he is safe from being in the midst of moderates.

Idaho: I wish my brother in law didn't live in Boise. I am afraid of getting shot if I don't clean off my bumper stickers when I visit.

                (Sorry, dumb post)

I live in Boise. Do not be afraid. Boise is probably the most liberal part of the state.

Yes, but one has to get there. Much like a Saharan oasis can be a paradise if you survive to reach it. :-)
